MLO 4: Secondary Cultural Knowledge
In addition to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures, the student demonstrates a general knowledge of a socio-cultural group other than a Hispanic one or mainstream American culture. The student develops a basic understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions) and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) – of the second culture.
Reflection:
HCOM 346 An introduction to the historical and cultural narratives that shape African American identities and experiences. Offers built-in assessment in HCOM MLO 7 or the concentrations in Africana Studies; Comparative American Studies; or History, Oral History, and New Media. (Offered every year.) (Prereq: GE Area A1 and A2 and A3) While Taking the course 346 at CSUMB, I learn so much about a new culture, race and how people from Africa, back in the twenty century suffered so much because they were not treat it as humans, they were discriminated and they got killed and they were counted it as slaves. We watch some movies in class on how the owners of the planters would take advantage of the African women and they raped them and slapped them and for me was surprising seen how many people were hanged out on the trees and got killed. Thru the semester I learned that Martin Luther King Jr. was brave to defend his people and that still now on days in the United States African American people still celebrate their traditions from their ancestors and they still practice their religion and now on days African American music is very popular and most American people still listen to their music and still practice African American traditions.
